Will it Snow Here?

December 21, 2022

Possibly, but this is not a BMTP emergency (Bread, Milk, Toilet Paper)! It will depend on how much cold air makes it south of Eugene which will determine any winter weather impacts here. Snow will be possible here on Thursday from about 6:00am to noon, as will the possibility of freezing rain. If any snow falls, it will likely be less than 1". It may not get cold enough overnight here for freezing rain. No wind concerns here.

At 7:00pm Wednesday, below freezing temperatures were occurring north of Junction City, indicating that cold Arctic Air is spreading south. Thursday will not be a good day to travel north or east due to severe weather impacts on the roads: snow, freezing rain, possible ice accumulations. This includes Eugene, which is expected to have snow and ice impacts from freezing rain.

When does the threat of snow/freezing rain end? By 1pm Thursday here. In Eugene, Thursday evening. North of Eugene, around noon or early afternoon on Friday. Portland may be Friday evening.

WINDS: Thursday around Portland can gust up to 50 mph and over 80 mph on I-84 along the Gorge. Winds Friday can gust to 30-45 mph. No wind concerns here, less than 10 mph.

On Christmas Eve, rain will be the case with no snow at any of the regional passes, including I-5 at CA/OR border. Just some showers on Christmas Day, then rain again on Monday Dec 26 with snow levels well above the passes. Strong storm may then move in on Tuesday morning with 2" of rain, but we'll talk about this with a post on Christmas Eve.
