Showers Thursday & Friday! How about Saturday?

August 21, 2024

YOU ALL HAVE A PURPOSE! It sure feels like Wednesday! A complex storm system will bring periods of showers Thursday and Friday, totaling up to around 1/4"-1/2" (best chances 2pm Thur-11pm Fri). As of the time of this writing, most of the rainfall looks to occur between noon Thursday afternoon and Friday night, BUT there may be some dry periods of little/no showers. Strong winds are not expected. There's a very small chance of a thunderstorm (mainly Friday), but not like what we saw last weekend.

SATURDAY looks iffy because the ultimate track of this system will depend upon whether the day stays mostly dry or if showers will continue and add up to 1/4" to the rain bucket. At this time, I'm leaning more towards some showers. Sunday looks dry (right now) and so does all of next week with a warming trend (see temperature chart below).

AUGUST RAIN IS NOT RARE! Some media outlets have said that rain is rare for August. That's untrue. Looking at historical records for Eugene from 1892 to 2023, August averages 0.39" of rainfall (especially between Aug 15-31). August is our second driest month of the year (averaging 0.39" of rainfall) and July is our driest month (0.32" of rainfall on average). The last year when no rain fell during August was 2006 and the most on record was 5.79" in 1968. Looking at every August 1893-2023 (131 total years), there's just 23 years of no rain for the entire month. For this same 131 year period: 23 years have had more than 1" of rain during August, 46 years have had more than 1/2" of rain, 68 years have had 1/4" or more of rain, and 81 years have had 1/10" or more of rain. So, no, rain in August is not rare by any means.
