Flakes / Dusting at times Thur-Mon, Continued Cold

March 1, 2023
  • Happy first day of Meteorological Spring! This is tied to temperatures, whereas the "Spring Equinox" is an astronomical event. By the way, Sunday March 12 clocks spring forward an hour.
  • Dry today (Wednesday) then a series of storms will affect the area early Thursday morning through Tuesday, bringing periods of rain/showers and snow levels as low as between 600-1000' at times.
  • Best chances for some flakes or a dusting in Cottage Grove looks to be each morning beginning Thursday and continuing through Tuesday morning. At this time it doesn't look like we'll see more than a dusting IF there's enough cold air and the right amount of moisture present for snow to fall here. As of the time of this post, the mornings of Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday have the more better chances for us to see a dusting. Any snow that falls during the mornings will quickly melt as daytime temperatures warm.
  • Total rainfall Thursday through next Tuesday looks to be around an inch. Currently we're at 19.38" since the start of the water year on Oct 1. Normal to date is 29.86".
  • Drought/Snowpack/Outlook: 77% of Oregon is in a drought. Statewide snowpack is at around 100-110% of average. Outlooks for March suggest better odds for above normal precipitation, but Apr/May/Jun odds favor normal to below normal precipitation.
  • Much below normal temperatures will continue over the next 10 days, with most nights below freezing so be mindful of ice). We "may" then be more "closer" to normal March 11 onward (normal high/low 56/36).
  • WEBCAMS for Cottage Grove have been purchased but are on a 14-day backorder. Should be shipped any day now. First two will go up at the Chamber of Commerce looking west down Main St and at Stacey's looking east down Main St. A third one at the Bohemia Gold Mining Museum (10th St) looking west at the American Flag in Bohemia Park (nice sunset view.
